Allahabad Bank

RBI has allotted the Indian Financial System Code in short denoted as IFSC codes to all the bank branches in India. IFSC codes are unique 11-digit codes with alphanumeric characters. These codes help the users to ensure that the transferred funds go to the right person account, without any errors.

For example, we can take the IFSC code: “ALLA0212118” - of Allahabad Bank, Purasawalkam, Chennai, Tamil Nadu.

  • Here, the first four alphabets, ALLA, indicate the bank name, i.e., Allahabad Bank.
  • The fifth digit is 0 (zero) - provided for future use.
  • The last six digits 212118 - denotes a particular branch at Purasawalkam, Chennai, Tamil Nadu.

This IFSC code can be used for online money transactions via NEFT, RTGS and IMPS to any Allahabad Bank account or to other bank accounts. According to RBI guidelines, the IFSC code is mandatory for interbank transfers via NEFT and RTGS to any bank in India. This code helps to avoid the risk factor while sending and receiving funds through banks in our country.

About Allahabad Bank

Allahabad Bank was founded by a group of Europeans in Allahabad on 24 April 1865. Within a few decades or until the end of the 19th century, it had opened 7 branches in Jhansi, Kanpur, Lucknow, Bareilly, Nainital, Calcutta and Delhi.

During the early 20th century, the bank found it difficult to raise deposits due to the Swadeshi Movement. In 1920, P & O Banking Corporation acquired Allahabad Bank with a bid price of Rs.436 per share. In 1923, this bank moved its head office and the registered office from Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh to Calcutta, West Bengal for reasons of both operational convenience and business opportunities. Later in 1927, Chartered Bank of India, Australia and China (Chartered Bank) acquired P&O Bank. It continued to operate Allahabad as a separate entity. It also opened a branch in Rangoon. In 1963, the revolutionary government in Burma Nationalized the Chartered Bank's operations there, which became People's Bank No. 2. On 19 July 1969, the Indian government also nationalized Allahabad Bank, along with 13 other banks.

In October 1989, this bank acquired United Industrial Bank, a Calcutta-based bank that had been established in 1940 and that brought with it 145 branches. Two years later, Allahabad Bank established AllBank Finance Limited, a wholly owned merchant banking subsidiary. Previously, this bank had a logo, a monogram consisting of ‘A and B’ which was replaced by ‘Triveni sangam’ logo in 1997.

Allahabad Bank had over 3,245 branches across India as of 31 March 2018. It did a total business of ₹ 3.8 trillion during the FY 2017–18 and its market capitalisation in June 2018 was US$573 million. This bank provided banking and financial services for 155 years until it was merged with Indian Bank approved by the Union Cabinet on 4 March 2020.

Indian Bank assumed control of Allahabad Bank on 1 April 2020. It has become the seventh largest public sector bank of the country with an assets of ₹8.08 lakh crores (US$110 billion).
