In 1890, Mitsubishi Bank origin took place in an exchange office dealing in foreign currency transactions with Mitsubishi Shoji which was the original Mitsubishi company. It is one the largest maritime shipping and warehousing enterprises in Japan. Five years later, it was reorganized into a full service banking department.

In 1917, the Mitsubishi group continued to grow and took necessary steps to reorganize. In 1919, the companies including the bank became independent. In the following year, the bank opened its offices in New York and London. Within ten years between 1919 and 1929, its capitalization doubled to ¥ 100 million. Many banks came down in Japan during disorder in industrialization, but this bank survived. Even during natural calamities such as the Kanto Earthquake in 1923 and several recessions, this bank sustained.

During the Second World War, Mitsubishi was forced to close its offices in New York and London.
