Being a resident of India or a Non-Resident Indian, PAN Card is required for everyone. PAN Card is a 10 digit number issued by the Income Tax Department of India to track the financial activities of the citizen of India who is living in India or abroad. It is issued under the supervision of the Central Board of Direct Taxes. An NRI who is a non-resident India is also required to apply for a PAN card for NRI, in case, he or she falls either of the above categories. Significance of PAN Card for NRI
- If the income earned by Non-Resident Indian is a taxable income according to the Income Tax Department of India.
- If NRI is trading in shares, through the depository, or broker.
- If NRI wants to make mutual fund investments
- If NRI wants to invest in Mutual funds.
- If NRI is looking to any land or any property located in India
Procedure to apply PAN Card for NRI
- Log on to the website of NSDL.
- People who are holding Indian Citizenship but living abroad is liable to fill Form 49A for Indian citizens. Being NRI if you are holding foreign citizenship like OCI holders or people of Indian origin are required to fill Form 49AA.
- Post filling the form, a confirmation screen would appear. It is shown to you so that you can check and verify all the details mentioned in the form are accurate and correct.
- In case any changes are required in the form, one can edit the form online and then submit it. After making a successful submission, you will get an acknowledgment receipt containing a 15 digit number. Take at least 1 print of it and keep it for future references.
- In the space provided in the acknowledgment, paste 2 recent passport size photographs.
- In the provided box, make use of the black ink or put your left thumb impressions. Make sure it is done in the provided box only; else your application may get rejected.
- Take out the printout of the form and attach all the necessary documents like Aadhaar Card, Driving license, Voter ID Card, address proof, and 2 colored photographs with black or white background, demand draft, etc.
- The processing fee for applying PAN Card for NRI whose communication address is outside India is Rs 1020 that includes PAN application fees, postage, and Tax. The PAN application services are provided in almost 105 countries.

Note: The Title of the envelope should be in this format: ‘APPLICATION FOR PAN- Acknowledgment Number’ (e.g., ‘APPLICATION FOR PAN- 981000100100123’). The acknowledgment, DD (if any), and proofs shall reach NSDL within 15 days from the date of making an online application.

Important facts to keep in mind while applying PAN Card for NRI
- If you are making an offline PAN application make sure of using the black ink to fill the form with clear BLOCK letters.
- Provide your signature only in the provided box and not across the photograph.
- AO code should be correctly mentioned in the PAN application form.
- Follow all the guidelines at the time of providing supporting documents like Identity proof and address proof. Make sure it is valid proof.
- Please make sure that the information mentioned in the PAN application should match perfectly with the supportive documents.
- If the person applying for PAN is a minor, then POA and POI are mandated to be deposited by his/her representative.
